What Is Acne And The Different Types of Acne

Acne is a small pocket of infected oil in the skin, produced by the sebaceous glands located in the chorium of the skin which which open into hair follicles. When this oil is trapped and infected it produces pimples known as acne. To make a simpler definition – acne is a skin problem that starts when oil and dead skin cells clog up your pores and it is the most common skin disorder seen by doctors.

Though a lot of teenagers get at least mild acne, it usually gets better after the teen years. Also, many adult women do experiencing having acne in the days before their menstrual periods.

Some have a heightened responsiveness to the testosterone hormone and have been noted to develop acne. Their sebaceous follicles become very active. This oily secretion, called as sebum, reacts with the bacteria Corynebacterium acnes that are normally present in the skin.  Their interaction can damage the skin resulting to swelling, tenderness and pus formation. Thus, resulting to a full-blown infected pimple  or acne.

Acne somewhat seems to affect the sexes differently.  Acne is more commonly seen in girls before a child reaches puberty.  During puberty, acne almost equally affects boys and girls, but boys generally have have more severe cases. In adulthood, acne tends to be see more often in women.

The Different Types of Acne:

Types of acne are being classified by Dermatologists in terms of severity which is divided into four grades. A simple visual inspection of the skin determines the grade of acne.

  • Grade I – It is the mildest form of acne with only minor and small number of pimples present. Blackheads and milia can sometimes be found in great numbers.
  • Grade II – It is considered moderate acne. Blackheads and milia would again be found in great numbers  and you’ll be noticing more papules and pustules formation in this grade. Slight inflammation of the skin is more visible with some general breakout activity.
  • Grade III – It is a stage where the case could be considered as severe. The only difference between the previous grade is the amount of inflammation present where the skin is more obviously reddened. In addition to previous visual symptoms, nodules are now present.
  • Grade IV – It is the most severe and serious form of acne.  This stage is referred as the cystic or nodulocystic acne. There is now a formation of cysts aside from the numerous papules, pustules and nodules that are visible in the skin. Breakouts are severe with pronounced amount of inflammation and therefore is very painful.

Whatever type of acne you might have it really can cause a great deal of anxiety and embarrassment. In severe cases, can cause depression and this emotional effects tends to be more painful and harder to handle. But can it be cured? Yes, of course!  But not overnight.
